Clay Mix is proud to present a solo exhibition by ceramic sculptor Garrett Masterson from September 3 through October 31, 2015. This exhibit showcases the most recent figurative sculptures created by the artist.
Garrett Masterson has been working on figurative sculptures for over two decades. He uses human figure as a format to explore human emotion and experience. The works are abstract with rugged, stony surfaces. Prior to his guest residency in Shigaraki, Japan in 2012, Masterson made a short departure from figurative work. He created a series of works entitled “Markers” which were massive stone-like objects. He explored colors on the surfaces of these forms. Now he has returned to the figurative work which have become more abstract and incorporate the color and monolithic qualities of his “Markers” series. These changes give Masterson’s new work a massive, primitive feel and the color adds to the emotional content of the work.
Garrett Masterson holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramic Sculpture from Portland State University, Portland, Oregon. He currently teaches ceramics at Reedley College in Reedley, California.
